What style of yoga interests you?
There are many different styles of yoga
and at least one that can suit you well. You may find your niche
right away, or you may like to dabble in different types of classes.
You may find that you click with one type at any hour of any day.
Or you may find that power works well for you on Tuesday morning but a
restorative class may be best for you on Sunday afternoon. Here
are some basic descriptions of different types of classes.
Chair
- This class is performed in
a chair
- Great for those with limited mobility
- The chair is a supportive
tool for those who may not be able to stand for long periods
of time or balance without assistance
Gentle
- Most of these postures are
done on the floor
- Great for people of all
ages and abilities
- Focuses on stretching and strengthening
Restorative
- Total and
effortless relaxation with the use of props
- Great for people of all
ages
- Allows the body to renew
and heal
Prenatal
- Focuses, of course, on mom and baby
- For women in any stage of
pregnancy
- Eases low back pain and
sciatica, aides digestion, properly aligns the body making
carrying baby slightly easier and so much more
Children's
- Geared for a younger crowd
that typically (but not always) has a bit more flexibility
than the rest of us
- Ages 3-13
- Teaches the basics of a yoga practice
with beginner postures
Power
- Often a mix of ashtanga
yoga - fast paced, constant movement- and vinyasa yoga -
synchronizing breath with movement
- Great for people that have
been practicing regularly for a year or more
- Gives an extra kick to
your yoga practice, often involving advanced postures
Heated
- Room temperature generally
set to about 100 degrees.
- Great for regularly
practicing people in good health and aware of health risks
(dehydration, false sense of laxity, etc)
- Before any exercise it is
wise to warm the muscles of the body up, this helps
accelerate that process
